What Does Stay Woke Mean?

If you stay woke, you don’t have to get woke!

According to Merriam-Webster the phrase Stay Woke is defined as social awareness. But here at WokeVideo.com, we define Stay Woke as a battle cry for Black social awareness of White supremacy.

Merriam-Webster goes on to say that Stay Woke phrase started in 2008, with the release of Erykah Badu’s song “Master Teacher”:

Even if yo baby ain’t got no money
To support ya baby, you
(I stay woke)
Even when the preacher tell you some lies
And cheating on ya mama, you stay woke
(I stay woke)
Even though you go through struggle and strife
To keep a healthy life, I stay woke
(I stay woke)
Everybody knows a black or a white there’s creatures in every shape and size
Everybody
(I stay woke)

They conclude that “Stay Woke became a watch word in parts of the black community for those who were self-aware, questioning the dominant paradigm and striving for something better.”.  With the dominant paradigm being White supremacy, Badu’s poetry speaks to how Blacks must stay vigilant through the obstacles White supremacy throws at them.  Stay Woke and Woke did became more popular in 2014, immediately following the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson, however, the phrase took on a deeper meaning. For Whites, Stay Woke became an awareness of their White Privilege in addition to unconscious fears of Black people as an symptom of systematic White supremacy propaganda. For Blacks, Stay Woke became an awareness of White supremacy and the lengths the system will go to subjugate Blacks and keep the status quo. This change in consciousness has become a departure from an European to an Afrocentric world view.

Why Stay Woke?

  • Stay Woke as a defense to economic, social, and criminal injustices that have historically dis-empowered Black people through systematic White supremacy.

  • Stay Woke to White supremacists not being limited only to organized hate groups, but include all unconscious participates of a White supremacy system.

  • Stay Woke to the understanding there is no assimilation for non-Whites into a White supremacist society, with the logic that non-Whites are inferior and pose a constant threat.

How to Stay Woke

The best way to stay woke is to keep this in mind: Since emancipation, Black Americans have survived broken promises, lies, and subjugation in a country that constitutes life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  From Jim Crow to the the racially bias judicial system coined the new Jim Crow, its imperative for Black Americans to become conscious or ‘Woke’ to America’s inherent White supremacist structure and its dangers to melanated Americans.  Viewing informative media from a Black perspective can help dissipate the constant barrage of white supremacy propaganda and alternate facts. The shrinking number of Black-owned media outlets in America isn’t enough to combat all the negative depictions of Blacks, the very depictions that reinforce the justification of White supremacy.
